Demetrio Zema reflects on a decade of Law Squared
Law Squared celebrates a decade in business this year. Below, Founder + Squared Group CEO, Demetrio Zema, reflects on the trust, encouragement and willingness to embrace something different that has allowed us to grow.
A Message from Demetrio Zema
It’s often said the years are short, but the days are long. Looking back on ten years of Law Squared, that feels exactly right.
When I started Law Squared, I was a young lawyer on the edge of burnout. I knew, with absolute clarity, that I couldn’t keep practising law the way it had always been done. It was time to do law differently, or not at all.
What followed was a leap of faith. From one desk in a co-working space, a clear conviction and a belief that there had to be a better, more human way to practise law, one that respected people’s time, wellbeing and intelligence, and delivered real value to clients.
Ten years on, I’m incredibly proud of what that belief has become.
Law Squared has grown from a single idea into a genuine alternative to the traditional law firm model, not just in how we price or structure our work, but in how we show up for our clients, our people and the profession. We’ve challenged long-held assumptions, backed ourselves to innovate, and stayed true to the idea that great legal work and a sustainable, human-centred business can, and should, coexist.
That evolution has also led us to something bigger. The formation of Squared Group reflects the broader impact Law Squared has already had and the potential we see ahead. By bringing together Law Squared, Cubed and Tetra Claims under a shared vision and ethos, we are shaping a more connected future across legal services, legal technology and claims management. It’s an extension of the same founding belief: that better systems, better experiences and better outcomes are possible when people sit at the centre of what we build.
With Gratitude
To our clients and supporters: thank you. Your trust, encouragement and willingness to embrace something different has allowed us to grow, to evolve, and to stay anchored to our purpose through the inevitable highs and lows of building and scaling a business. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside you.
But this milestone belongs first and foremost to our people.
Law Squared exists because of the extraordinary individuals who have chosen to believe in what we’re building, those who are here today, and those who have been part of our journey along the way. Your care, courage and commitment have shaped this firm in ways no strategy or structure ever could.
I want to particularly acknowledge our long-standing Chief Operating Officer, Trent Milvain, and our Chief People + Capability Officer, Cassandra Hatton, who will continue working with me at a Group level as we enter our next chapter.
Welcoming Our First CEO
After a decade stewarding Law Squared, I’m incredibly excited to have passed the baton to our first CEO, Claire Sundin. Claire’s vision, leadership and deep alignment with our values has made her the right person to lead Law Squared into its next phase. Having stepped into the role of Squared Group CEO, I have done so with complete confidence in Claire’s ability to build on what we’ve created and continue challenging convention in meaningful ways for our clients and for our people.
We’ll be celebrating Law Squared’s official birthday in March with our current and former team, and many of you who’ve been part of this journey. There will be more to say then. For now, thank you for being part of our first ten years, and here is to many more.
I look forward to connecting and celebrating with you in the months ahead.
With gratitude,
Demetrio Zema
