Law Squared Appointed Official Legal Partner to Australian Institute of For Purpose Leaders
The Australian Institute of For Purpose Leaders (AIFPL) has appointed multinational law firm, Law Squared, as it’s official legal partner. Under the terms of the partnership, Law Squared will provide free, tailored legal support to Australia’s for-purpose leaders.
Law Squared x AIFPL partnership to build capacity of Australia’s For-Purpose leaders
“Partners like Law Squared play a key role in supporting our mission to connect, inspire and build the capacity of Australia’s For-Purpose Leaders,” says Peter Holdsworth, Chairperson of AIFPL. “Law Squared is strongly aligned to our goals of building the expertise, knowledge, skills and networks of this leadership group, and this partnership will make it easier for our members to access the specialist legal advice they need, when they need it.”
The centrepiece of the partnership is a dedicated legal hotline, providing all AIFPL members with free, on-demand access to general legal support. Accessible via the AIFPL member portal, the hotline will include direct phone line and email service monitored by Law Squared’s experienced Employment, Corporate, Commercial, Property & Project and Disputes & Litigation lawyers.
From 1 January 2026, AIFPL members will be able to book a complimentary 20-minute call for general advice for their organisation with a Law Squared lawyer, matched to the nature of their enquiry. This might include questions around contractors, psychosocial hazards, onboarding, performance and exit issues, governance and board issues, funding and commercial contracts, privacy, disputes, or other day-to-day legal questions that arise in running a for-purpose organisation.
Where members require legal services beyond the scope of general advice - such as document preparation or review, detailed written advice, or representation before bodies such as the Fair Work Commission - Law Squared will work with them to scope those requirements and provide a clear, fixed-cost proposal.
For-purpose leaders face additional legal considerations
Head of Employment and Workplace Relations at Law Squared, Andrew Brooks, is among the lawyers manning the Hotline and see firsthand the pressure for-purpose leaders face: “In today’s competitive environment, for-purpose leaders must navigate many of the same challenges as for-profit businesses, even if their budgets are significantly lower” says Andrew. “That includes employee issues, occupational health and safety, privacy and data protection, indemnities and intellectual property protection, Directors’ Duties, leasing and report to regulators.”
“On top of that, for-purpose leaders often face additional legal considerations given their reliance on funding, and larger reputational consequences if things go badly.”
Other specialist areas that NFP leaders need to be across include charity regulation and ACNC obligations, legal duties to volunteers under occupational health and safety laws, Working with Children Checks and other screening requirements, fundraising and licensing laws, and ensuring impact and ESG campaigns are not misleading or deceptive. Whistleblower protections and reporting obligations to boardsd, funders and regulators further add to the complexity.
“It’s a lot to stay across,” says Andrew. “This partnership is designed to make that easier and less stressful.”
A decade of specialist legal support for not-for-profit organisations
Founded in 2016, Law Squared regularly works with not-for-profit organisations across Australia, New Zealand and the UK including Oxfam, Who Gives a Crap, Expression Australia, Guide Dogs Victoria, VACCHO and The Fred Hollows Foundation, to strengthen governance, meet regulatory requirements, manage employees and disputes and build secure commercial foundations.
Unlike traditional legal firms, Law Squared works exclusively on a fixed-cost basis for all legal services. This innovative model, which eliminates the uncertainty of hourly billing, is designed to encourage early engagement and give for-purpose leaders and their teams confidence to seek legal advice before issues escalate.
Under the partnership, Law Squared will also develop and share practical resources for AIFPL members, including templates, guides, videos and checklists aimed at building legal and governance capability within the sector. In addition, the firm will deliver a series of training sessions and workshops tailored to specific member segments and special interest groups - for example, governance fundamentals for boards, Respect@Work and psychosocial safety, an recent employment law changes.
“AIFPL exists to equip leaders with the tools, networks and confidence to lead high-impact organisations,” says Peter. “Having Law Squared as a partner, and giving our members direct access to their expertise, is an important step in supporting that mission.”
