Law Squared doubles down on legal innovation as profession debates AI’s impact

Law Squared has appointed Alex Vulkanovski as Head of Legal Operations & Innovation, reinforcing its position at the forefront of legal service transformation.

As the legal profession focuses on how AI will reshape legal service delivery and billing models, Law Squared is taking a different approach. The firm, which recently marked its 10-year anniversary, has appointed Alex Vulkanovski as Head of Legal Operations & Innovation.

For Law Squared, the move is not a reaction to AI; it’s a continuation of a model built without the billable hour from day one.

“Other firms are asking how to protect revenue as AI improves,” said CEO Claire Sundin. “We’ve been asking a different question for ten years: how do we deliver better legal work? Because we don’t work on time-based billing, we can focus entirely on improving quality and client experience.”

Founded in 2016 to challenge traditional legal models, Law Squared’s structure is now a competitive advantage, allowing it to adopt new technologies, redesign workflows and evolve the role of the lawyer without commercial friction.

Operations as strategy

Tasked with building the systems, workflows and AI infrastructure that will define the next decade of legal service delivery, Vulkanovski’s appointment reflects a deeper investment in legal operations and AI as core business enablers — not peripheral IT adoption or back-office support.  

With experience spanning private practice, consulting and global in-house teams including Gilbert + Tobin, KPMG, Remote and Johnson & Johnson, Vulkanovski has designed, built and deployed systems that enable legal teams to operate at scale.

“The industry is focused on only part of the equation,” said Vulkanovski. “It’s not just about what happens to billing when AI makes lawyers faster, it’s about how the work itself changes and where lawyers add value. My focus is to build the systems to enable that shift, without sacrificing our human-centred ethos.”

Sundin added: “AI is an accelerator, but acceleration without direction just gets you lost faster. We’re investing in the foundations of clear processes, structured data and well-designed workflows - alongside upskilling our people.”

Attracting a new kind of lawyer

The appointment comes alongside continued growth across the firm, with new hires in Corporate and Disputes & Litigation, including Georgina Parisis, Melanie Skinner and Catherine Marangos, as well as paralegals Claire Welsh, Angelina Talevski and Sienna Bessaron.

“Our ability to attract talent comes down to the way in which we work,” Sundin said. “Lawyers aren’t just opting out of timesheets, they’re opting into a different kind of career, where their value is measured by the quality of their thinking, not the volume of their hours.”

Looking ahead

As the firm enters its second decade, Law Squared is focused on the next frontier of legal services - combining human expertise with technology, operational discipline and pricing models that reward efficiency and provide exceptional client outcomes.

“There’s a lot of noise around AI and pricing,” Sundin said. “We’re focused on what great legal work looks like now, and what it should look like next.”
