Strategic Leadership Transition at Law Squared

Law Squared has announced the appointment of Claire Sundin as its Incoming Chief Executive Officer. Claire, formerly Global Head of Legal – Retail at H&M Group, becomes the firm’s first CEO, following close to a decade of stewardship by Founder and Director, Demetrio Zema, who moves to the role of Group CEO of newly established parent company, Squared Group

This strategic leadership transition follows an extensive executive search and signifies the next chapter in Law Squared’s ambitious growth story. The firm has evolved from a one-person legal practice to a multi-jurisdictional business recognised for its innovative, fixed-cost approach to legal engagement across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Law Squared Remains Proudly Independent Law Firm

While the appointment does not alter the firm’s ownership structure, with Law Squared remaining proudly independent and founder-owned, Demetrio is enthusiastic about appointing a dedicated CEO, providing Law Squared with focused leadership as he steps back from day-to-day operational responsibilities: "Claire's global leadership experience, innovative mindset, and alignment with our core values make her the perfect fit to lead Law Squared moving forward.” In his new role, Demetrio will concentrate on guiding the broader strategic vision for Squared Group, which encompasses three specialist businesses: Law Squared, Tetra Claims, and Cubed by Law Squared.

Welcome Claire Sundin, Incoming CEO - Law Squared

In her previous role at H&M Group, Claire was based in Stockholm, where she led legal strategy for more than 4,000 stores across 70+ countries and managed a global team of 55+ lawyers. Working alongside the H&M Retail Board, Claire drove expansion, integrated AI-powered legal tech tools, and fostered collaboration among multi-jurisdictional teams. Her career also includes roles at the Children's Investment Fund Foundation in the UK and working both in-house and in private practice in Australia.

Reflecting on her appointment, Claire says: "Law Squared has built an enviable reputation for its innovative approach and commitment to delivering exceptional client outcomes. I’m excited to continue this legacy by empowering teams, strengthening client relationships and driving sustainable growth."

Claire will begin a three-month transition period working closely with Demetrio, before officially taking on the CEO role on January 1, 2026.

Introducing Squared Group

In his new role as Group CEO – Squared Group, Demetrio will continue to collaborate closely with the Executive Team which includes long standing Chief Operating Officer, Trent Milvain, and recently appointed Chief People + Capability Officer, Cassandra Hatton, both of whom will now take on Group roles. As part of this transition, Law Squared's operations team will also join Squared Group, providing strategic, commercial, and operational support across finance, technology, people, marketing and partnerships.

Demetrio adds: "This restructure provides each specialist businesses with dedicated leadership and focus on client delivery, innovation, and growth, while benefiting from the alignment, consistency, and scale of Squared Group’s operational and executive support."

The transition comes on the heels of a busy year for Law Squared, following the launch of Cubed by Law Squared (a legal tech business) and Tetra Claims by Law Squared (a third-party claims administration business) earlier in 2025.
