How outsourcing their legal services helped Geoscape Australia thrive

 

Geoscape Australia is one of Australia’s leading providers of accessible location data, including addresses, building attributes, roads information and cadastral boundaries. Its national data products and services power countless apps, products and processes to support our digital economy.

In its almost 20 years of operation, Geoscape Australia has grown into a dynamic and innovative company.  It partners with data owners, both public and private, to source authoritative, high quality geospatial information. Geoscape Australia takes a customer-first approach throughout their operations, and are currently scaling their Geoscape product suite through a more accessible and dynamic product offering and partnerships with its resellers and product partners.

  • In early 2020, a member of the Geoscape Australia in-house team tendered his resignation, which left Geoscape Australia one dedicated legal team member short. With a notice period of four weeks, Geoscape Australia were on the hunt for someone to fill that role, although it didn’t necessarily mean that it would be an in-house position - they were open to alternative legal models like a secondment or an external party joining their in-house team. While exploring their options, Geoscape Australia approached Law Squared to see what alternatives we could offer.

    Law Squared had previously been engaged by Geoscape Australia to carry out ad hoc work and had built a good relationship with the Geoscape Australia in-house team. Once the conversation began about what alternatives Law Squared could provide for Geoscape Australia, it was clear that LSaaS was the perfect fit for them.

  • Geoscape Australia and Law Squared explored the work required to give the Law Squared team a solid understanding of the work that was involved with supporting the in-house. This meant that Law Squared was able to put together a tailored solution quickly and start the onboarding in less than 2 weeks. Geoscape Australia didn’t have to go through a lengthy recruitment process and could overlap the Law Squared team with their departing lawyer to allow for a seamless transition.

    While Geoscape Australia were drawn to the idea of LSaaS for a number of reasons, what ultimately gave them the most confidence was the fact that it enabled them to have access to a dedicated contact who could learn and understand their business and then draw on the support of all four of Law Squared’s legal teams where different expertise is needed. In the past six months, Geoscape Australia has utilised all four of Law Squared’s legal teams and they have worked with six different Law Squared lawyers, each of whom have brought their own expertise to different matters in a seamless and straightforward manner.

  • Over the past six months, Geoscape Australia have been able to rollout several projects with the help of LSaaS and manage day-to-day issues as they come up. Most notably, they have been able to finalise a new suite of contracts for their revamped partner program. The smooth transition to LSaaS enabled this work to be completed on schedule, which enabled the partner team to roll out the new program effectively.

    Now that they are six months into their LSaaS experience, the Geoscape Australia in-house team could not be happier with how it is going. They have been able to seamlessly transfer a substantial part of their legal services to Law Squared through LSaaS and are continually working on ways to further enhance the offering that they have been provided with. With the assistance of LSaaS, Geoscape Australia are now able to respond to other business units in a quick and effective manner, which was reflected in the satisfaction of the internal staff in a survey following the transition to LSaaS.
